Changing with the Culture of Expectation

Changing with the Culture of Expectation

Shannon Taylor is a Business Development Manager for Arval and works in the company’s dedicated Rental team.

Anybody currently running a fleet of vehicles - especially commercial vehicles - will be well aware of the current market challenges of long lead times and poor vehicle availability. Challenges such as these exist because of a set of circumstances that are completely outside of any fleet manager’s control, such as the global emissions scandal and WLTP. These, coupled with radical changes to the country we live and work in such as Clean Air and Low Emission Zones appearing across the major cities of the UK, mean that many more potential challenges exist for people managing their fleets - even though the impact for the future will generally be a positive one. The shape of fleets are truly changing and evolving at a pace quicker than we have ever seen before – and what this has inspired is a movement of people needing much greater flexibility and choice when picking vehicles for their current and future fleets.

One of the most interesting shifts in the industry though is coming from the pressure of something that is even more of an uncontrollable force – the culture of expectation. The kind of world we live in today where online companies offer delivery straight to your door the very next day means that people now have an expectation for immediate availability of products, and this does not change when it comes to your drivers. Our customers are finding that their drivers now have this same expectation and are starting to pose the question – why is this not the same for the vehicles they drive?

But what can you do about this critical shift in market and cultural change? How do you keep your drivers happy whilst strengthening and future proofing your fleet? The simple answer is that businesses need to evolve and adapt. And many are already doing just that. Renting a vehicle for anywhere between one day and 24 months is on the ‘up’ and we are increasingly seeing this type of service becoming an everyday part of the mix for those in the commercial vehicle industry. With Arval offering flexible rental solutions to our customers, we have seen a clear rise in the number of businesses taking these on board as important new parts of their changing fleet.

Gone are the days where this kind of solution was seen an ‘unnecessary spend’ and many are now embracing this as a positive opportunity to create a flexible and dynamic fleet that can be tailored to business needs at short notice. And that can be no bad thing.
