Cyclists and Drivers Do's and Dont's

Drivers Do's

  1. Expect sudden movements by cyclists, especially in windy weather and on bad road surfaces
  2. Look out for cyclists, especially when turning – make eye contact where possible
  3. Use your indicators – signal your intentions so that cyclists can react
  4. Give them plenty of space - at least half a car’s width
  5. Advanced stop lines allow cyclists to get to the front and increase their visibility. You must stop at the first white line reached at traffic lights
  6. Always look for cyclists before opening a car door
  7. Give cyclists turning right extra consideration

Drivers Don't

  1. Don’t dazzle cyclists - use dipped headlights, the way you would with another car

Cyclists Do's

  1. Do read the Highway Code and undertake formal cycling training
  2. Be visible. Ride clear of the curb, wear bright clothing and always use lights after dark or in poor weather conditions
  3. Show drivers what you plan to do. Always look and signal
  4. Always wear a helmet! – Ensure your helmet fits correctly and is fastened securely
  5. Use off-road cycle paths where provided
  6. Avoid riding up the inside of large vehicles like lorries or buses where you might not be seen

Cyclists Don't

  1. Don’t  jump red lights
  2. Don’t ride on pavements
  3. Don’t ride the wrong way up one-way streets unless there is a sign saying cyclists can
