Mercedes E-Class - Overview
The E-Class is Mercedes-Benz’s executive model that’s available in saloon, coupe and estate forms. A high-riding, more rugged, all-wheel drive version of the estate called All-Terrain and a convertible are to join the line-up later this year. Four-wheel drive isn’t just available in the All-Terrain, but also across the line-up with selected engines, while there’s also a variety of hot Mercedes-AMG models within the current body-styles.
What is the Mercedes E-Class like to drive?
There are few cars that can offer this level of refinement and relaxation for mile after mile, which is why it’s a favourite with high-mileage business drivers, board room executives and chauffeur fleets alike. If all the settings are left in ‘comfort’ mode, then the E-Class truly offers superb ride quality. While most will stick with comfort, thanks to sport or sport+ drive modes (which change the suspension, steering and throttle) the driver can have some fun on twistier roads too if the mood takes them and in the hot E43 and E63 Mercedes-AMG versions, the E-Class really is great to drive. You soon learn to trust the E-Class’s steering accuracy and find that the large E-Class is easy to position on the road.

How to spec the Mercedes E-Class
While the bigger engines can make the E-Class a more fun car, that isn’t really what the E-Class is about for the majority of people. This makes the E220d, with Mercedes’ new super-refined 194hp 2.0 diesel, the pick of the range because it’s swift enough and very efficient. All E-Class variants are well specified as standard, which is why we’d go for the SE model. However, we would add a couple of company car driver-friendly option packs including Comand Online and the Driving Assistance Package. And, for all the extra space and practicality it provides, we’d also go for the estate.
Mercedes E-Class interior – what’s it like?
The cabin of the Mercedes E-Class is a special place. Up front, the dashboard is very simply designed and free from clutter. The controls, including the touch-sensitive control pad, are easy to learn and operate and the large screens are clear and don’t suffer from reflections. The dashboard and doors also feature built-in mood lighting that really adds class when you get in at night. Front seats are supremely comfortable and offer very good lateral support. In the rear of the saloon and estate there’s loads of leg and headroom for adults, which also means smaller kids won’t be kicking the back of the driver’s seat either. As you’d expect, the material qualities throughout the cabin are first rate too.
In all versions, the boot is big for the class. The estate has a boot of 640 litres and, as an added bonus, it also comes with 40:20:40 split fold rear seats.
