Honda Civic - Overview

The Civic is Honda’s mid-sized family hatchback. Now in its 10th generation, it’s known for its reliability and for being among the most spacious and practical hatchbacks in its class. The latest model has an incredible amount of standard equipment and, along with futuristic styling, it also introduced a new pair of low capacity petrol engines.

DRIVING

What is the Honda Civic like to drive?

Smooth and composed, the Civic handles rough surfaces very well and has a comfortable ride. In addition to traits such as reliability and practicality, previous versions have also been known for being great to drive and the current model is no exception. The handling is sharp and there’s plenty of grip, while the six-speed manual transmission is a pleasure to use. The big news for the latest Honda Civic is the addition of two all-new, low capacity petrol engines to the range. These comprise a 1.0-litre 129hp VTEC Turbo and a 1.5-litre 182hp unit of the same name. Drivers shouldn’t be deterred by their small size, as both engines are surprisingly punchy and capable of giving larger, more conventional powertrains a run for their money. They’re great fun to drive enthusiastically, but they also have a large amount of mid-range pull, so they also suit a smoother style of driving.

What engines and gearboxes are available?

Petrol engines:

 • 1.0 VTEC Turbo 129hp, 106-117g/km CO2 (20-22% BIK), 55.4-60.1mpg
 • 1.5 VTEC Turbo 182hp, 133-139g/km CO2 (25-26% BIK), 46.3-48.7mpg

Gearboxes:

 • 6-speed manual
 • CVT automatic

How to spec the Honda Civic

You can’t argue with the amount of equipment Honda offers with the Civic, to the point where even the entry-level SE model looks generously kitted out. The mid-level SR trim is definitely the pick of the range though, as it includes a wealth of features company car drivers will put to good use, such as sat nav, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto connectivity and a rear parking camera.

The sprightly performance of the 1.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine, plus its low emissions and impressive fuel economy, make it the pick of the range for corporate drivers.

Honda Civic interior – what’s it like?

The Civic is known for having one of the most spacious interiors in its class. There’s plenty of legroom for rear passengers and lots of storage space throughout the cabin. This Honda also has one of the biggest boots in the family hatchback segment; at 478 litres with the rear seats in place, it’s well above the class average, and the cargo area extends to 1,267 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. Certain models come with a removable boot floor, which can be folded up and stored in a small plastic box on the inner boot wall, adding an additional 58 litres of storage space.

THE ALTERNATIVES

VERDICT

Verdict

The Honda Civic is a great all-rounder and excellent value when you consider the amount of kit you get at its price point. It’s fantastic to drive, cheap to run and the futuristic looks make it stand out from the crowd. A massive boot and spacious interior render it thoroughly practical too.
