Arval’s pick of the range: Volvo V40 D2 Inscription manual

Volvo V40 - Overview

Volvo launched the V40 hatchback that rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-class back in 2012, and then revised it in 2016 to give it the latest family look and adjust the trim levels to match the rest of the Volvo range. Alongside the five-door hatch, there’s also a Cross Country version with more rugged looks, better ground clearance and the option of all-wheel drive.

DRIVING

What is the Volvo V40 like to drive?

Under the skin of the Volvo V40 lurks the underpinnings of the Ford Focus. This is a hang-over from when the Blue Oval owned Volvo, and is no bad thing. It means the car drives well, and can be fun on a b-road thanks to sharp steering. The seats are particularly comfortable – a typical Volvo trait – which adds a good level of comfort to the overall ride of the V40. Refinement is good from the petrol engines and the 2.0-litre diesels in the manual versions of the car.

What engines and gearboxes are available?

Petrol engines:

  • T2 1.5 auto 122hp, 129g/km CO2 (24% BIK), 51.4mpg
  • T2 2.0 122hp, 127g/km CO2 (24% BIK), 50.4mpg
  • T3 1.5 auto 152hp, 129-131g/km CO2 (24-25% BIK), 50.4-51.4mpg
  • T3 2.0 152hp, 127-128g/km CO2 (24% BIK), 50.4mpg
  • T5 auto 245hp, 137-149g/km CO2(26-28% BIK), 44.1-47.9mpg

How to spec the Volvo V40

The D2 Inscription with the manual gearbox is good for company car drivers and fleet managers alike. Not only does it offer the lowest CO2 figure at 94g/km and the best fuel consumption, it’s also quick enough for the vast majority of occasions. And the Inscription specification comes with everything a business driver could want, including sat nav, cruise control, park assist, leather seats and a DAB radio. You could also add a couple of options, such as the Winter Pack for heated seats or Intellisafe Pro for a host of safety features.

Volvo V40 Interior – what’s it like?

The exterior of the car is good looking, the cabin design in the Volvo V40 is why you’d buy the car. Unlike rival prestige cars in this class, the V40 interior has a light air to it thanks to a broad range of interior trims and materials such as light leathers and interesting woods. There’s plenty of room up front and the seating position is one of the best going. Rear legroom is fine for four adults, while the boot is 335 litres. There are also neat touches such as the surprisingly useful fold flat front passenger seat, which allows longer loads to be carried.

VERDICT

Verdict
