Volvo XC40 D4 AWD auto R-Design

Volvo XC40 - Overview

The XC40 is Volvo’s small SUV that will go head-to-head with other models such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. It’s already a multi-award winner including scooping 2018 European Car of the Year.

What is the Volvo XC40 like to drive?

Rightly, Volvo does not see the XC40 as a sporty car, which means the small SUV has been set up to be comfortable and easy to drive. Available as a front-wheel drive car in the lower powered engines and as a four-wheel drive for the rest of the range, the XC40 is a comfortable and relaxed drive no matter which engine is chosen. All engines are also remarkably quiet both around town and at a steady motorway cruise. There’s minimal wind and road noise that enters the cabin at higher speeds and the eight-speed automatic gearbox is smooth to shift gears as well.

The suspension is set up to remove intrusion from small bumps in the road and it does a great job of minimising jolts from potholes. The driving position helps ease the driving experience by giving an excellent high view over other road users – something some sportier alternatives miss out on.

How to spec the Volvo XC40

To experience the best Volvo has to offer, the best engine option for business users is the D4 engine. This is marginally less efficient than the D3, but the additional power really suits the relaxed nature of the XC40.

For the best trim level, the entry level Momentum specification is very well kitted out, however, the styling kit that comes with the R-Design trim is well worth considering. There are also a few choice packs and options that are desirable such as Apple CarPlay and the winter pack, which adds heated seats and heated washer jets.

Volvo XC40 Interior – what’s it like?

Just like the unique, attractive exterior of the Volvo XC40, the interior is brilliantly designed. As with the rest of Volvo’s range, the dashboard uses a 9” touchscreen to control in-car functions such as sat nav, climate control and the stereo, which is intuitive and a great way to de-clutter the cabin of buttons.

The rear seats offer excellent leg and headroom to comfortably fit either two adults or three children. The boot is a practical 432 litres, just slightly behind that of the alternatives.

Volvo XC40 Alternatives

Other vehicles worth considering are the Audi Q3, BMW X1 Mercedes GLA, Infiniti Q30, Volkswagen Tiguan and Jaguar E-pace

Deserving of all its awards. The XC40 is the best car in this class thanks to a practical and attractive design plus a first-rate driving experience.
