Volvo XC60 - Overview

Now in its second generation, the Volvo XC60 is the perfect antidote to other premium SUVs. Based on the same platform as the larger XC90, the XC60 is a five-seat mid-size SUV with a first-class cabin, stylish interior and plenty of space to carry both passengers and luggage in total comfort.

What is the Volvo XC60 like to drive?

As with its bigger sibling, the new XC60 has made a significant leap forward in the way the SUV behaves on the road. Body roll is significantly reduced with no impact on ride comfort which means the car feels more energetic in the corners and much improves the experience for the driver.

The steering is well-judged – being light when manoeuvring yet offering enough weight and feel as speed picks up.

As with all Volvos, the superb seats improve comfort levels beyond the already excellent suspension.

The Swedish manufacturer has also worked hard to achieve class leading refinement levels from the two diesel and one petrol engine.

What engines and gearboxes are available?

Petrol engine:

  • 2.0 T5 254hp, 167g/km CO2 (34% BIK), 38.7mpg

Diesel engine:

  • 2.0 D4 190hp, 136g/km CO2 (31% BIK), 48.7mpg

Petrol hybrid engine:

  • 2.0 T8 320hp, 49g/km CO2 (13% BIK), 134.5mpg

How to spec the Volvo XC60

Choosing the right Volvo XC60 is simpler with the latest version as the car is only available as an automatic and with all-wheel drive.

As a result, we’d go for the D4 engine which offers plenty of power and great performance figures. As for trim level, the Momentum Pro model provides a superb level of standard specification, such as 18” alloy wheels, heated seats, satnav, powered driver’s seat, quick-clear windscreen and, like all Volvos, an extremely comprehensive list of safety equipment.

volvo xc60 interior

Volvo XC60 Interior – what’s it like?

All modern Volvo interiors are wonderfully Scandinavian, particularly for those selecting the lighter colour interiors that show off the design in the best light. Up front, the dashboard is dominated by the large portrait orientation infotainment screen, which houses the vast majority of the XC60’s controls. It’s a great way of offering a clean look to the interior as it results in significantly fewer buttons elsewhere on the dash.

The rear seats offer excellent head and legroom with plenty of space for adults.

The boot has a flat load floor and offers 495 litres of space below the parcel shelf. Fold the rear seats and load the car to the roof, and luggage space increases to 1455 litres.

Volvo XC60 Alternatives

Alternative models to consider include the BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mercedes GLC, and Audi Q5.

The Volvo XC60 has class-leading comfort levels, excellent refinement, a brilliant interior. And now, thanks to revisions made to the suspension for the second-generation car, it’s also one of the best cars to drive too.
