What is it?
The XC60 is Volvo’s five-seat mid-size SUV which has been supremely popular since it first went on sale in 2009. The XC60 goes head-to- head with cars such as Land Rover’s Discovery Sport, the BMW X3 and Honda’s CR-V.
What is the Volvo XC60 like to drive?
The XC60 offers a first-rate driving experience with a good, high driving position. While not as sporty as some German rivals the ride comfort is far superior. However, it still has little body roll in the corners and can be a rewarding drive.
What engines are available?
There are two engines available, both 2.4-litre diesels. The D4 models are powered by a 190hp engine and are available as either front or all-wheel- drive. The 220hp car is only available as a four-wheel- drive. Both power outputs are available with auto or manual gearboxes.
What are the key standard features of the Volvo XC60?
The XC60 range kicks off with SE which includes cruise control, steering-wheel audio controls, roof rails, auto-fold door mirrors, auto wipers, 17in alloys, auto dimming rear view mirror, fold forward front passenger seat, city safety, USB & aux connections, digital radio and Bluetooth.
What are the key options?
Volvo is good at offering packs of options. The Winter Pack includes heated seats, heated front screen and heated screen wash jets. The Driver Support Pack includes blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control and rear collision mitigation. The Family Pack is also popular and includes power child locks and integrated booster seat. Sat nav can also be ordered across the range.
How spacious is the Volvo XC60?
The cabin of the XC60 is a very roomy and comfortable place to be. The front passenger seat folds forward and flat to help if you’re loading longer items. The rear seats will easily seat three adults too. The boot space of 495 litres is at the upper end of the class although not quite an outright winner. However, the Volvo’s luggage space is a very practical shape, making it easy to fit in pushchairs and other normally awkward items.
What will it cost to run?
The front-drive D4 version is very efficient with a CO2 output of just 117g/km which means the manual car qualifies for the 21% benefit-in- kind tax band. However, the rest of the range is impressive too. Even the D5 all-wheel-drive model is still very competitive at 137g/km and 25% BIK, making the entire range fleet friendly.
What safety features does it have?
As you’d expect from Volvo the XC60 is very safe. The City Safety system which aims to avoid low-speed rear-end collisions is standard across the range as are six airbags, a host of anti-skid controls, Isofix for the rear seats, tyre pressure warning system and it’s also got a five-star EuroNCAP rating.
Alternatives include the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Nissan X-trail, Lexus NX and Jeep Cherokee.
