Polestar's origins can be traced back to the founding of Flash Engineering in 1996, a Swedish racing team in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC). The team was later renamed Polestar Racing, beginning engineering their own racing Volvos in the late 2000s. Volvo's purchase of the company and brand was completed in August 2015, allowing Polestar to create enhanced models directly from affiliated dealers.

The Polestar 1 was launched in 2017, as a 2-door plug-in hybrid sports car, based on Volvo's Concept Coupè from 2013. The Polestar 1 is built on the Volvo Scalable Product Architecture platform and utilizes a hybrid powertrain, with a front-mounted engine and two separate electric motors at the rear.

The Polestar 2 was released in 2022, as a battery-electric 5-door hatchback. Volvo's exterior design chief Maximilian Missoni changed the tail lights, grille, and wheels on the car to differentiate it from the rest of the lineup. The Polestar 2 is also the first car launched with Google Android Auto operating system installed.
