FAQ's

Here we will answer some of the frequently asked questions around Vans.

What do the letters and numbers signify in vans description?

These differ from one manufacturer to the next slightly, but the principal remains the same. Lets look at the Vauxhall Movano L3 H2 R3500 HD panel van as an example. 

  • L = Load Length, the Vauxhall Movano above for example comes in 4 lengths 1-4
  • H = Height,  the Vauxhall Movano above for example comes in 3 heights 1-3

Drive Layout

  • F = Front wheel drive
  • R = Rear wheel drive
  • 3500 = This denotes the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) in kilograms. If we look back at the example above, the Movano is available in 2800/3300/3500/4500
  • HD = Heavy duty designation used when twin rear wheels are fitted

With Ford vans, the naming convention is slightly different, the GVW is shortened to 3 digits. For example the Ford Transit Custom 270 L1H1, means the length and height are 1, and GVW is 2700kg. 

What do I need to know about the vehicle weights?

Gross Vehicle Weight: the maximum legally permitted weight of the vehicle – this is the sum of the unladen weight and the payload

Gross Train weight: the maximum permitted weight of the vehicle and any trailer being towed, plus any load carried in the vehicle and trailer.

Kerb weight: the weight of the vehicle as it stands “at the kerb”, i.e. ready to drive with fuel and oil in the engine, but excluding the driver, additional equipment such as racking or a roof rack, and the load to be carried.

Maximum towing weight: the greatest weight of any trailer and its load which may be towed within the limit of the vehicle’s plated Gross Train Weight.

Noseweight: the imposed weight of the trailer upon the rear of the towing vehicle.

Plated weight: the maximum legal weight found on the vehicle plate.

What is a bulkhead?

This is a partition that provides an extra level of security by separating the cab area and the load area. Bulkheads come in half height, full height, solid, Grille/mesh and bulkheads with windows

What is a chassis cab?

It consists of a cab and ladder frame which is the basic building platform upon which the vehicle can be  converted to a tipper, dropside or box van

What is a dropside?

These have an open top and shallow sides that drop down for easy access, commonly used in the construction and landscape/gardening industries.

What is Gross Train Weight (GTW) and Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)?

GTW  is the maximum permitted weight of the van + the trailer being towed (this includes any loads being carried in the van/vehicle or trailer.

GVW is the maximum allowable weight of the van including the weight of the driver, passenger’s fuel and any load being carried.

What is a Luton van?

A Luton van has a box style body that extends over the cab, they are very popular with removals companies because they have a large internal storage capacity

Do I need to know about wheelbase length?

You will see this abbreviated to SWB (Short wheelbase), MWB (Medium wheelbase), LWB (Long wheelbase). The wheelbase is the distance between the centre of the front wheel and the centre of the rear wheel. The size of the wheelbase you choose is determined by what you will use the vehicle for. So if you are transporting small items, then a SWB would be ideal. Alternatively if you are carrying larger items, then a LWB could be right for you.
